Police encourage safety first this Halloween

Police are encouraging parents and caregivers to ensure their children can celebrate Halloween safely.

National Prevention Manager Superintendent Bruce Bird says young children keen to head out trick or treating should be accompanied by an adult.

"We want all children and young people to have fun and enjoy themselves whilst celebrating Halloween and there are a few simple tips to make this happen."

He says Police encourage trick or treaters to head out early in the evening before dark and to stay in areas that are well lit with street lights.

"Children should only visit houses in their neighbourhood where they know the residents, stick together in a group and only split up into smaller groups if accompanied by an adult."

Even though Halloween is supposed to be spooky, trick or treaters need to take care not to scare elderly residents.

Superintendent Bird says, "For those householders not wanting to celebrate Halloween, posters can be printed online at the NZ Police website to be displayed in the window or front door of your home, discouraging trick or treaters from stopping by."
