New Zealand missing persons

Each year the New Zealand Police receive more than 8000 reports relating to Missing Persons.

Of those reported missing, approximately 95% are found within a short period of time, usually before 14 days, with over 50% located within the first two days.

Although the wait for contact from the missing person can be distressing for friends and family, the reality is that within 48 hours most people reported missing will either be found safe and well or will have returned home or made contact with their friends or family.

However, there are more than 300 long term Missing Persons in New Zealand (people who have been missing for more than one year).

People go missing for a number of reasons:
  • Their own choice
  • Wanderers and absconders
  • Suicidal
  • Not by choice eg. Crime related, mishap or misadventure

If a family member or friend is missing and you hold genuine fears for their safety, please contact your local police immediately.
