Huge cannabis operation uncovered in Onehunga

Auckland City

Up to 1,000 cannabis plants, tens of thousands of dollars worth of cannabis "heads", a crossbow and a quantity of what Police believe is methamphetamine or "ice" was discovered in a warehouse in Selwyn St, Onehunga, by Police executing a search warrant there yesterday.

The mainly hydroponics operation was under guard last night and Police photographers and fingerprints experts are at the scene this morning.

Auckland City District eastern area CIB staff are also at the property and will carry out a full scene examination this afternoon.

One man - a 35 year-old Onehunga resident - was arrested yesterday and was due to appear in the Auckland District Court today to face charges of cultivating cannabis and allowing a premises to be used for the purpose of cannabis cultivation.

Detective Sergeant Dave Nimmo said the alleged operation was huge and sophisticated.

"The cannabis plants range in size from seedlings to fully grown trees, so we've got a fair bit of product to move," Mr Nimmo said.

"We'll be executing further search warrants in connection to this discovery over the next few days so I expect there'll be further arrests related to this operation."
