Arrest after campus stabbing

1 min read

A 19-year-old male student will appear in the Wellington District Court tomorrow charged with attempted murder after a fellow male student was stabbed and injured at Victoria University's Kelburn campus this morning.

Detective Sergeant Tim Leitch, Wellington CIB, said the incident happened at 11am in the university's Murphy Building on Kelburn Parade. The 18-year-old victim and the alleged offender knew one another.

"The victim needed hospital treatment for slash injuries to his arm and abdomen," Detective Sergeant Leitch said. "He's expected to be discharged tonight."

Detective Sergeant Leitch said the incident was witnessed by several other people in the building who were traumatised by what had happened.

"People reacted very quickly at the scene, provided help to the victim and stayed with the alleged offender until police arrived," Detective Sergeant Leitch said.

A small knife was recovered at the scene.

Police are appealing to people who saw what happened, and who have not already been spoken to by police, to contact the Wellington CIB on telephone 04 381 200.
