Police and volunteers search for missing walker

Teams of Police and Land Search and Rescue (Land SAR volunteers) are currently looking for missing Whitby man Vaughan Solomon. The 40-year-old intended to go for a walk on the Puffer Track into the Tauherenikau Valley from the Marchant Road end, in Upper Hutt, but did not return home as expected last night. Officer in charge of Wellington Police District Search and Rescue, Acting Sergeant Anthony Harmer, says a team of around 20 Police and Land SAR volunteers are involved in the operation. Vaughan Solomon is believed to be fit and able and reasonably familiar with the area. "We will continue searching in the lower Tararua area but are urging anyone who may have seen Vaughan Solomon yesterday to phone us immediately on (04) 381 2000." He is described as a male Caucasian, 6 foot tall, of solid build with light brown or blonde hair. He is likely to be wearing some army-styled clothing and tramping boots.
