Missing Canadian pair's vehicle located

1 min read

Police searching for two Canadian nationals reported overdue while travelling in New Zealand have located a vehicle the pair rented.

Connor HAYES (25yrs) and Joanna LAM (24yrs) were last seen at Fox Glacier on the afternoon of 10 September.  A portion of their wrecked rental van was located earlier today in a gorge off the Haast Pass road at Haast Gates on the West Coast of the South Island.

The rear wheels and chassis of the vehicle were located about 80 metres down a bluff in the Haast River. The body of the vehicle and engine have not yet been located.

At this stage Police do not know whether Miss LAM and Mr HAYES were in the vehicle when it left the road.

A Police crash investigator and photographer are at the scene and searching will resume tomorrow.

At first light searchers will make their way up the Haast River on foot and in jet boats. A helicopter will also be used to fly over the area in an attempt to locate the pair.
