UPDATE: Helicopter crash – Eves Valley, Nelson

Police were notified at 2.55pm this afternoon that a helicopter involved in the Pigeon Valley fires operation in Nelson had crashed.

Police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand responded to the scene. The helicopter involved in the crash was located in bush area along with the pilot. The helicopter did not catch on fire.

The crash occurred in the Eves Valley area.

The pilot received minor to moderate injuries and is in Nelson Hospital. His family have been advised and are currently supporting him.

Our thoughts are with the family of the pilot and we wish him a speedy recovery.

The crash occurred within the cordon area and Police have secured the scene. 

The Civil Aviation Authority have been notified of the crash.  The Transport Accident Investigation Commission will be at the scene tomorrow and will lead the investigation.

The Civil Aviation Authority have approved the resumption of air operations in the area.

The helicopter company involved in the crash and the family for the injured pilot have asked for privacy at this time.
