How do I pay an infringement fee?

Credit card: pay an infringement fee online via Westpac's online payment system

Cash or cheque: at any branch of Westpac. You must have the ticket with you for the bank to process your payment.

Cheque or money order: send (with the notice number included) to; New Zealand Police, PO Box 6641, Wellington

I've lost my speeding ticket. What should I do?


You have 56 days to pay an infringement fee from the time it was issued.

If it is unpaid after 28 days you will receive a reminder notice, which you can use to pay at any Westpac branch. If you lose the reminder notice, call the Police Infringement Bureau on 0800 105 777, or 04 381 0000 from a cellphone, 8am-4.30pm, Monday to Friday. Or email us using this form.

If the fee is not paid in full by the due date it is referred to the Collections Unit of the Ministry of Justice for enforcement.

What is the scale of demerit points for traffic infringements?

1-10 km/h

10 demerit points

11-20 km/h

20 demerit points

21-30 km/h

35 demerit points

31-35 km/h

40 demerit points

36 km/h and above    

50 demerit points

If you get 100 or more demerit points within 2 years, you will be suspended from driving for 3 months.

There are no demerit points for speed camera tickets.

Demerit points for other offences are listed in the Road Code.

Do Police accept part payments on Infringement Notices?

No. An infringement fee must be paid in a single full payment by the final due date.

If the infringement fee remains unpaid by the final due date it is referred to New Zealand Courts and becomes a Fine. Courts may allow other payment options (by application only) if they determine you are unable to pay the Fine on time. Additional charges will apply.

How do I pay a infringement fee from overseas?

Use the Westpac Bank secure online payment system.

Or forward your payment using one of the following options:

Bank Cheque

  • Contact any bank to arrange a bank cheque Make the bank cheque payable in $NZ for the amount of the infringement fee

Personal Cheque

  • Convert the amount of the infringement fee using the current exchange rate
  • Write the equivalent amount of the infringement fee in your local currency (not in $NZ)

The remittance advice must be sent with all payments to NZ Police, PO Box 6641, Wellington, NEW ZEALAND.

If the fee is not paid by the due date, the infringement will be referred to New Zealand Courts for fines enforcement. Arrangements may be made with New Zealand Courts for subsequent payment, which may include on-line payments using credit card details. Additional fees will be imposed by New Zealand Courts.

Can I make an explanation over the phone?

Can I get information about my traffic infringement history?

Yes. You can apply in writing to the Police Infringement Bureau using this form [PDF, 45 KB]. A photocopy of your drivers licence (or passport) is needed for identification. The Police Infringement Bureau will send you a copy of your Police Infringement History within 20 working days from the date your completed application and identification is received.

Note: The Police Infringement Bureau holds information relating to Police infringement history only. If a Police infringement fee is not paid, it gets lodged at Court and it becomes a fine. If you want information relating to your record of unpaid infringements (fines), or traffic convictions, you need to refer your query to the Ministry of Justice. Information relating to demerit points, driver licences or vehicle registration should be referred to the New Zealand Transport Agency. You can also get a copy of your criminal record from the Ministry of Justice.

Q: Can I get someone else's Traffic infringement history?

You may only apply for information about another person if you have their signed permission and a copy of their identification.

Q: How do I request a Court hearing for an infringement offence?

If you are the person named on the notice you can write to the Police Infringement Bureau to ask for a Court hearing, before the final due date for payment. You need to tell us the notice number, your full name and address and sign the request. You can also email a request using this secure form. A Notice of Hearing will be sent to you to tell you the hearing date in Court.
