Area Controllers

Canterbury District is divided into four areas for policing:

South and Mid Canterbury: Area Commander, Inspector Dave Gaskin is based in Timaru, phone 03 688 4199. This area includes the mid Canterbury towns of Temuka, Geraldine, Ashburton and Methven, and the Mt Cook/ Aoraki National Park.

Southern: Area Commander, Inspector Malcolm Johnston, based at Christchurch South Police Station, phone 03 363 2502. This area covers from Arthurs Pass in the Southern Alps across the Canterbury Plains to and including Banks Peninsula and the Port of Lyttelton. It also includes the southern suburbs of Christchurch around to Sumner. The Universities of Canterbury and Lincoln are both in this area.

Central: Area Commander, Inspector Derek Erasmus, phone 03 363 7400, based in Christchurch Central, Hereford Street. This area includes the central city and some of the eastern suburbs.

Northern: Area Commander, Inspector Dave Lawry, phone 03 363 7400. From the north west suburbs of Christchurch this area covers Christchurch International Airport over to New Brighton, and North Canterbury, Rangiora, and Kaiapoi up to the Conway River, just south of Kaikoura.
