There has been a good response from members of the public to an appeal from Police for information, after a piece of concrete was dropped on a car travelling on Auckland's Southern motorway on Friday night.
The driver of the car, Christopher Wayne Currie, of Taupo, died instantly. The 20 year old played prop for King Country Rugby under 20s and was travelling to Auckland for a game on Saturday. Travelling with him in the car was his girlfriend and two other female friends.
Police are conducting a suspicious death inquiry and Detective Senior Sergeant Neil Grimstone says, "An act of stupidity has cost the life of a fine young man who was innocently driving to a rugby game with friends.
"Someone knows or witnessed what happened here and members of the public have already come forward with information that is assisting police. I am confident the right information will help find who was responsible," says Det. Senior Sergeant Grimstone.
Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area, or driving on the motorway at 9:20pm Friday night who may have seen anything to contact the Counties Manukau Crime Squad on 2611 321.
"Police receive calls on a daily basis regarding people walking on the motorway, throwing items from over bridges and risking their own lives but also the lives of innocent motorists. Police respond to them quickly and also monitor activity using surveillance cameras in an effort to keep the motorway network safe.
