Police provide Xmas Cheer for four legged inmates

December 24, 2009, 10:43 am

For the second holiday period in a row, Police in Auckland have reached into their own pockets and provided support to Animals cared for at Mangere's SPCA village.

"I am thrilled at the response of Police staff in the Auckland region, it has exceeded my expectations" said appeal organiser, Senior Sergeant Hirone Waretini.

"Last year it was a small thing done from my station in Onehunga and the Auckland City Eastern Area together with the Northern Communications Centre, but this year I broadened the appeal to the whole Auckland District."

Police staff from Waitakere also got wind of the initiative and arranged their own collection. This year saw contributions from Avondale, Newmarket, Greenlane, Northern Communications, Waitakere and Auckland Central Police Stations and Headquarters.

Items donated range from tinned food to a huge dog bed and a play tunnel.

Senior Sergeant Waretini and some of his staff intend to donate the food at the SPCA Village in Mangere today at 1.30pm.
