Methamphetamine Lab equipment found on Northland farm

1 min read

Police have had to clean up a large area of bush and farmland after chemicals and waste products from a methamphetamine lab were found on a Northland property.

An active clan lab was discovered during Operation Fender in December, which targeted burglary and drugs.

That lab was located in a house, situated on a farm in Whangae, north of Kawakawa.

After the discovery of the lab, the farmer checked through surrounding bush on the farm and found chemicals, waste product and glassware.

Police were called in, and with the help of ESR and the Auckland Clan Lab team, they recovered nine 20 litre drums containing chemicals and waste product, three cooking kits, a firearm and a stolen vehicle.

The area has also been cleaned up.

Detective Sergeant Rhys Johnston said the toxic waste left lying around had the potential to cause serious damage the environment. It was clear that those responsible had been using the area for some time.

He said police were very grateful for the help they received from the local farmers and urged anyone who noticed any suspicious activity linked with drugs to contact their local police station or make an anonymous call to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

"Police will continue to put pressure on people who persist in manufacturing and dealing in methamphetamine and with help from the public we plan to put a dent in this type of activity," said Mr Johnston.
