Man dies in crash

Police have released the name of the man who died in a crash on SH3 south-west of Hamilton this morning.

Ratu David Lewis, 56, of Rotorua, died at the scene of a crash at 6.45am today at the intersection of SH3 and Airport Rd.

Police say it appears Mr Lewis' car collided with a 4x4 as it turned out of Airport Rd onto SH3. A woman and her young son from Hamilton were in the 4x4. They were not injured but were taken to Waikato Hospital for observation and later released.

The police serious crash unit is investigating the crash.

An elderly couple in their 70s are in a serious condition in Waikato Hospital after their car collided with a truck at an intersection on Matangi Rd, south-east of Hamilton this morning.

The crash occurred at 10.45am when the car turned on to Matangi Rd from a side road and collided with the oncoming truck. There were roadworks in progress at the time and police are investigating the cause of the crash.
