Waikato Police have launched an investigation into an assault at a prison in the north of the District today that left a prison officer fighting for his life in an Auckland hospital.

Detective Inspector Lance Burdett said Police were called to the Springhill Corrections Facility following the assault on the officer by a prison inmate shortly before 3pm.

"The officer suffered serious head injuries in the assault and was transported to Middlemore Hospital where he is listed as being in a critical condition.

"Police are working closely with Corrections on this matter and will be carrying out a scene examination and interviewing a number of people today in relation to the incident. We are not seeking anyone else in relation to the assault at this time."

Mr Burdett said no further details on the injured officer can be released at this time as Police were still working with Interpol colleagues to contact family members overseas.
