Hamilton man's death and street attack not linked

1 min read

Hamilton Police investigating the death of a man are concerned inaccurate media coverage on the case may adversely effect public perception of City safety.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton of the Hamilton CIB said a post-mortem carried out in Auckland today revealed the 43-year-old man died of natural causes.

"Disturbingly some media today linked the man's death to an alleged assault on a person on the same street the night before. Both incidents are completely unrelated and the assault is being investigated as a separate matter.

"This morning we confirmed we were investigating a sudden death and needed to wait for post-mortem results to determine what, if any, suspicious activity took place. As revealed in the post-mortem results there were no suspicious circumstances related to this man's death."

The man's death has been referred to the Coroner.
