Unidentified Male Falls from Motorway Overbridge

Police are investigating an incident in Auckland last night, in which a young man has fallen from the Bond Street over bridge, overlooking the North Western motorway at Newton.

Sergeant Helen Faith of the Ellerslie Motorway Patrol, says that about 11.40 pm last night, Saturday 17 June 2006, an unidentified Maori male, was seen walking along a sector of the bridge.

"Soon after the man was seen falling into one of the westbound lanes of the motorway. He was then struck by an oncoming car."

"The man died while an ambulance was taking him to hospital," Sergeant Faith said.

"Police urgently want to identify the man so that his family can be notified."

Police describe the man as:

Maori - Male

Identity unknown

Age - about 25 years.

Medium build - medium length black hair

Clothing - Dark trousers, light coloured top, white sneakers

"A post mortem examination is to be carried out. Two lanes on the North West motorway were closed for four hours. The occupants of the vehicle were shaken by the incident, but otherwise they were unhurt," Sergeant Faith said.
