Search operation underway for Thai man in Te Puke

August 18, 2010, 10:04 am

Western Bay of Plenty Police have commenced a search operation for a 26 year old Thai man who ran away from Police and Immigration officials at a rural Te Puke property last night.

Western Bay of Plenty Area Commander, Inspector Mike Clement, says Police and Immigration officials went to the property at approximately 7pm last night <>, seeking information about three Thai men who had breached their immigration status.

Inspector Clement says all three men entered New Zealand in August 2007 with temporary work permits to work on an orchard in Marlborough. Their permits expired in August 2008 and the three men have remained in the country unlawfully ever since.

"The three men were all located at this property, and were being spoken to by Police and Immigration.

"One of the men ran away from Police, through an orchard on the property. Police pursued the man on foot through the orchard, until reaching a dense, bush-covered embankment running alongside the Waiari River.

"A Police dog was brought in to track the man further, however, the search was called off when it became too hazardous for Police staff to continue."

Inspector Clement says the search re-commenced at first light this morning. The Tauranga Area Search and Rescue team has been deployed and a helicopter has flown over from Rotorua to assist with the search.

The 26 year old man is Payeo CHAIMAT, a Thai national. He was wearing a light grey top and grey pants and shoes. Inspector Clement says he believes Mr Chaimat speaks understandable English.

"If anyone has seen Mr Chaimat, or knows where he may be, please contact Tauranga Police urgently on 07 577 4300.

"Obviously we are keen to talk to Mr Chaimat further about his immigration status, but of far more importance right now is to find him and ensure he is safe and well."
