Western Bay of Plenty Police are asking for the public's help to locate a missing Thai man who ran away from Police at a rural Te Puke property last night.
Twenty-six year old Payeo CHAIMAT ran away from Police and Immigration officials at a rural Te Puke property last night. Police had visited the property seeking information about three Thai men who had been living and working in New Zealand unlawfully. Their temporary work permits expired in 2008.
The other two men are in Police custody.
Western Bay of Plenty Police Area Commander, Inspector Mike Clement, says Police have not yet located the man, but they believe he has changed his clothing and may have left the specific search area.
"While we want still want to talk to Mr Chaimat further about his immigration status, our immediate priority today has been to try and find him and ensure he is safe. Hence the extensive search and rescue operation this morning.
"As a result of the search, we now believe Mr Chaimat has changed some or all of his clothing, and that he may have moved away from the immediate search area.
"We are appealing to anyone who may have seen Mr Chaimat, or knows where he may be, to contact Tauranga Police urgently on 07 577 4300, or provide information anonymously through the Crimestoppers line, 0800 555 111."
Inspector Clement says Mr Chaimat speaks understandable English.
