Wairarapa CIB investigating two serious incidents overnight

September 3, 2010, 2:47 pm

Masterton Police need help from the public regarding an aggravated robbery and a suspicious fire overnight.

At about 11.35pm last night, three masked men armed with rifles and a jemmy bar burst into a Worksop Road address and confronted the occupants demanding cash.

Head of the Wairarapa CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Sean Hansen says the three offenders then fled on foot, making off with cash, wallets and a small quantity of alcohol. They ran down Worksop Road, into Kaka Street and then into Takahe Street.

"There were several children asleep at the address during the robbery and although no one was injured this is particularly disturbing."

He says anyone with information on this incident should contact Masterton Police immediately, particularly any nearby residents who may have located any items of clothing or weapons which may have been discarded by the offenders as they fled."

In a second incident overnight, a house in Belvedere Road, Carterton appears to have been deliberately set alight shortly before 1am this morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Sean Hansen says the house was unoccupied but he's urging anyone in the vicinity of Belvedere Road and nearby streets to contact Police if they saw any suspicious activity between 10 o'clock last night and 2am this morning.

The scene has been examined by Fire safety officers and Police staff and is being treated as suspicious.

The house was also subject to a fire on 27th of July which caused extensive damage.

"At this stage, it appears these two incidents are unrelated. Anyone with information on either of them should phone Masterton Police immediately on (06) 370 0300 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
