A man is helping Hamilton Police with their enquiries this morning as they investigate the stabbing of three males in the south of the City overnight.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton of the Hamilton CIB said officers, back up by members of the Waikato Armed Offenders Squad, searched a Melville address this morning searching for people and evidence related to the incident.

"The property was secured without incident and a man is currently being interviewed in relation to what happened.

"At this stage it appears two groups of males encountered each other around the Bader St shops and the altercation deteriorated to the point where three males from one group, aged 13, 22 and 17 suffered stab wounds."

Two of the trio discharged themselves while the third is in a serious but stable condition in Waikato Hospital following overnight surgery.

Mr Thornton encouraged those involved in what happened to come forward and urged anyone with any information on last night's events to contact Police.

"Due to the apparent risk to both the public and our staff members of the Armed Offenders Squad were utilised in support of our enquiry staff.

"Those involved in last night's events need to understand the degree of seriousness Police are placing on what happened and they can expect more such visits and other measures as we work with the local community and partner agencies to resolve this matter."

Anyone with any information on the identities of those involved or who may have seen groups of youths congregating in the area around the time of the incident is asked to contact Mr Thornton at the Hamilton Police Station on 07 858 6200.

Alternatively information can be left anonymously on the CrimeStoppers crimeline, 0800 555111.
