A rural Waikato road is currently closed to allow investigators to establish what caused a workplace accident that cost the life of a road worker north east of Hamilton this afternoon.

Sergeant Juliet Burgess of the Huntly Strategic Traffic Unit said emergency services were called to the scene on Woodlands Rd about 3.30pm.

"It appears a tarseal spraying truck has run over a roadworker on a stretch of roadworks on Woodlands rd, about 5km from the intersection with SH1B, just east of Law Rd.

"The 55-year-old Huntly man suffered serious injuries in the incident and died a short time later at the scene, the Waikato Serious Crash Unit is investigating what occurred and given the man's death was a workplace accident the Department of Labour have also been informed."

Mrs Burgess said Woodlands Rd was currently closed while preliminary investigations were carried out but it was hoped that the road would be reopened by 7.30pm.
