Remember the weekend for rugby not tragedy

2 min read

This weekend is not only a holiday it marks one of the biggest sporting events in New Zealand history, as the All Blacks take on France in the Rugby World Cup final. Central District Police are expecting more traffic on the roads than usual as well as an increase in parties and socialising so they are urging everyone to think ahead and take care. "The combination of roads and alcohol is illegal and potentially lethal at any time. Add to the equation extra traffic and tired families heading home from school holiday trips and the risk increases considerably," said officer in charge of Highway Patrol in Central District Police, Senior Sergeant Kris Burbery. "We want everyone to remember this weekend for the rugby and not because of a tragedy on our roads." People travelling through Central District are also reminded that the Manawatu Gorge remains closed following a major slip. Alternative routes are available over the Saddle Road and the Pahiatua Track but these will add at least 15 minutes on any trip so motorists should figure this into their plans. Additional patrols will be working during the weekend in Central District. A reduced speed tolerance will also be enforced nationwide, meaning anyone caught driving more than 4km/h over the speed limit can expect a fine and demerits. General tips to help this weekend run smoothly. • Have your car serviced or at least do some basic maintenance checks - oil, water, wiper blades and tyres. Most tyre companies will provide pressure checks, top-us and puncture repairs for free. • Map out your route. • Check the weather and road conditions and drive to those conditions. • Have a full tank of fuel and on a long trip work out in advance where you intend to re-fuel. Remember not all service stations are open 24hrs. • Don't just re-fuel your vehicle. Take regular rest breaks. New Zealand has a great cafe coffee culture so make the most of it. Keep bottled water in the vehicle to ensure you stay hydrated. • Make sure there is plenty to keep children occupied. Bored and restless children are a distraction and can stress a driver. • Keep an emergency pack to hand with water, snacks, warm clothing and a first aid kit in case or a breakdown. If you have a mobile phone make sure it is fully charged for an emergency but remember it is now against the law to use it while driving. • There will be a "Driver Reviver" stop on SH1 at Ohakea on Labour Day Monday offering refreshments and motorists are urged to make use of that as they travel through the District. REMEMBER: • Don't drink and drive • Keep your speed down • Be patient and courteous to other road users • To report a traffic incident dial *555 • Road safety is everyone's responsibility!
