Serious assault in Whanganui

1 min read

Police in Whanganui are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault in Whanganui early this morning.

A 19-year-old man was walking near the intersection of the Carlton Avenue extension and Parson Street at approximately 3.20am this morning when he was attacked by two people.

The victim, who is from Whanganui, was knocked to the ground and it is believed the assault continued while he was on the ground.

Neighbours heard the commotion and contacted Police. The victim was taken to Wanganui Hospital where he is being treated for serious head injuries. It is not believed his injuries are life-threatening at this stage.

Police have established that there was party or social gathering in nearby Surrey Road at the time of the attack so people would have been in and around the area and Police are keen to hear from anyone with information about this incident.

An 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old male youth from Whanganui were arrested a short time later in the area and will appear in court tomorrow on serious assault charges.

Anyone with information relevant to this investigation is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Phil Taylor at Whanganui Police on 06 349 0600. Alternatively information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
