Hamilton Police are working with a school and partner agencies to insure a secondary school student who was the victim of an alleged sexual assault gets the support she needs as they appeal for information from the public to locate the offender.

Detective Sergeant Robbie Hermann of the Waikato CIB said Police are investigating a complaint in which the student was the victim of a sexual assault while walking home from school on Monday 27 February.

"The girl was walking along Durham St about 3.20pm when she was approached by a man who got out of a white vehicle and grabbed her.

"The offender has forced the victim into the back of the vehicle and raped her."

Mr Hermann said it took some time before the victim was able to find the courage to report what had happened to authorities.

"This is not unusual for victims who have been traumatised to such a degree. The key now is to ensure this girl gets the help she needs to work through this and that Police obtain information from the public to help catch the offender responsible."

The offender is described as a clean shaven solidly built Maori or Polynesian male aged around 20-years-old with short black hair driving what appeared to be a 20-year-old white 4-5 door hatchback car.

"We want to hear from anyone who may have seen something suspicious in the area at the time of the attack or who has information on the identity of the attacker," said Mr Hermann.

Anyone with any information on the incident on 27 February is asked to contact Mr Hermann at the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 858 6200.

Alternatively information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
