The man whose body was found at a house in Campbell Street, Whanganui has been named as Derek Leonard Round, aged 77.

Mr Round had been the subject of a violent attack.

Around 40 staff are now involved in the investigation, with a detailed examination of the property in Campbell Street expected to take another two days to complete.

Forensic examination of Mr Round's car - a blue 1996 Jaguar XJ6 - has also taken place today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Kirby of Whanganui CIB says the inquiry team is focused on the movements of the car and locating clothing which has been linked to the scene.

"I particularly want to hear from anyone who may have seen the blue Jaguar between 6.30pm on Wednesday 16th May and 8.30am on Thursday morning.

"I am also keen to locate some items of clothing which may have been discarded."

They are

• A red long sleeved jersey or sweatshirt
• A black leather sleeveless vest
• Dark coloured stonewashed jeans
• Dark fingerless gloves
• A pair of dark coloured sports shoes with a light colour around the soles and coloured laces.

A search of both sides of the river bank in Whanganui has been underway today in an effort to locate the clothing.

"I would like to thank the residents of Campbell Street who have already helped us with the investigation. If you live in the street and have not yet spoken to us please contact the inquiry team at Whanganui Police station on 06 349 0600." said Mr Kirby.

The cause of death will not be established until a post-mortem examination is carried out tomorrow.
