Waikato Police will be contacting colleagues in Auckland, Wellington and the South island as they work to establish the extent of an alleged fraud in which victims paid for air tickets were left grounded.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Andy Bu Bear of the Hamilton CIB said so far, 15 people had contacted Waikato Police in relation to heavily discounted return airfares from Auckland to Tonga.
"We're aware of further victims in Auckland and South Auckland and are working to verify reports other people from as far away as Wellington and the South Island may have been targeted and we would ask anyone who may have fallen victim to this alleged scam to make contact with us."
Mr Bu Bear said as investigators worked to establish the extent of what has happened Police have a simple message for people targeted by scammers.
"Often the circumstances change but the basics remain the same, if something seems too good to be true then it probably is and we urge people to check the bona fides of anyone trying to sell items or services at heavily discounted rates.
"All too often it is the people who are the most vulnerable and who can least afford it that are targeted, if something doesn't appear right it probably isn't and in situations such as this we recommend people use the services of reputable travel agents, air lines or service providers."
Anyone with information on the identity of the persons involved in the alleged selling of the air tickets or who has been a victim of the scammers but not yet spoken to Police is asked to contact Hamilton Police on 07 858 6200.
