One dead after boating tragedy on Waiohine River

Wairarapa Police have rescued two people after a boat capsized on the Waiohine River. Tragically, a man in his 50s has now been confirmed as dead.

It is believed that three people capsized from an inflatable raft near the swing bridge at the foot of the Tararua Ranges just after 3.00pm today.

Members of the public heard their calls for help and contacted Police who responded with the support of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

One female was able to be immediately make it to safety with a second female being rescued just after 5.00pm by a jet boat.

Police will not be releasing the name of the deceased male until family have been advised.
