Search for missing man focuses on island

1 min read

The search for missing 35-year-old Leighton Grant in Taupo has turned to Motutaiko Island after items including a wetsuit were located there.

Mr Grant was last seen on Friday (25 January) and his car was found on Monday at Hallets Bay, just south of Hatepe.

Last night searchers discovered items including a red, grey and black wetsuit on the island and police believe they belong to Mr Grant. A team of about 25 LandSar volunteers and police officers are now focusing on a comprehensive search of the Island and its surrounding waters.

The island has wahi tapu areas so an Iwi representative is working alongside Police.

Police are particularly keen to hear from anyone who has been in the vicinity of the island in recent days who may have seen someone swimming to the island, or any boaties who have taken anyone to or from the island.

Anyone with any information about Mr Grant's disappearance is asked to call Taupo Police on 07 378 6060.

Media enquiries should be referred to Communications Manager Kim Perks on 027 234 8256.
