Police have now arrested three Levin men in relation to the fatal stabbing of 27-year-old, Michael Les Valentine.

Officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Marc Hercock says: “The information from witness statements has developed some positive lines of inquiry. We believe that prior to Mr Valentine's death there was some type of altercation involving a number of other people."

A 31-year-old man has been charged with murder and is currently remanded in Police custody. He is due to appear in the Levin District Court on Monday 4 February, 2013.

A 22-year-old man has been charged with assault in relation to the incident resulting in the death of Mr Valentine. He appeared in Levin District Court today and has been remanded in custody and is due to appear again on Thursday 7 February, 2013.

Lastly, a 29-year-old man has also been charged with assault in relation to the incident resulting in the death of Mr Valentine. He is due to appear in Levin District Court on Monday 4 February, 2013.

"In addition, we are appealing for sightings of a white Mitsubishi Pajero 4WD, registration CTJ418, between the hours of 6pm to midnight yesterday. We believe this vehicle has been used at some point prior to, and after the fatal stabbing of Mr Valentine."

The scene examination is expected to continue over the next 48 hours. A post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow.

“We do not believe that this was a random attack. We understand that there was disagreement in regards to some minor matters between the victim and those arrested."

Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the death of Mr Valentine.

“Even though we have made arrests this investigation is still ongoing and we are appealing to the public for sightings of the vehicle mentioned above and for any information relevant to this investigation. Please come forward and contact us if you know something,” says Detective Senior Sergeant Hercock.

Police extend their thoughts and condolences to Mr Valentines family and friends at this difficult time.
