Police and Fire Service investigators are today at the scene of an overnight fire that claimed the life of one man and left a youth injured.

Huntly Sub-area manager, Senior Sergeant Peter Simpson, said the fire broke out at a house in the small village of Meremere about 3am.

"At the time of the fire there were four people in the house, two managed to get out in the initial stages and when fire fighters arrived they located a youth inside who was overcome by smoke.

"The body of a man who had died was also found though the cause of death is yet to be established, the youth was taken to Waikato Hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation," he said.

Mr Simpson said it was too early too early to comment on what caused the fire.
