The hedgehog that Andrew rescued

Hawera Police have yet again come to the aid of their resident hedgehogs after one of them was caught for a second time in a tight predicament.

Sergeant Andrew Russ was patrolling the streets when he found a hedgehog staggering with a plastic cup stuck on its head on Glover Road, Hawera, at 4am this morning.

"Once I pulled the hedgehog free it then became apparent that it may not have been after the contents of the cup, as there was a snail inside who may have consumed some of the shake and was now being hunted for its shake flavoured aroma," said Andrew.

In April 2013, another Hawera officer found a hungry hedgehog stuck in the same type of cup and delicately separated the two, and in November 2014, Nelson Police responded to a similar incident.

After separating the hedgehog and snail from the cup Andrew sent both safely on their way.

"It's unusual for this to happen twice in the same town but it just goes to show that you never know what's around the corner in this line of work," said Andrew.
