Attempted aggravated robbery in Palmerston North

1 min read

Police are investigating an attempted aggravated robbery at a pawn-broking business in Palmerston North.

Two men armed with weapons entered Xtra Cash, on the corner of Main Street and David Street, at about 2pm on Monday 8 August 2016.

Wearing dark clothing and with their faces covered, they confronted a female staff member before jumping the counter and trying to get into the rear of the business. When that failed, they fled and ran into David Street where they were picked up by a two-door grey Nissan Skyline with darkened windows. The car left at speed and drove into Cuba Street.

Police have already established that the vehicle, which has yet to be recovered, was stolen from a Palmerston North address in the early hours of that morning.

Detective Carl Newton said: "This offence was a brazen attempt to rob this business and understandably caused significant distress to the victim. No-one should be subjected to this type of behaviour, or placed at risk of harm, simply for doing their job.

"Fortunately the victim suffered no physical harm but this offending is serious and the people responsible need to be identified and stopped."

Police believe the offenders may have canvassed the area before committing this offence and encourage anyone who may have information about this robbery, or the vehicle used, to contact Detective Newton on 06 213 9578. Alternatively, you can provide information anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
