Canterbury drivers urged to stay safe this long weekend

1 min read

Canterbury Police are urging drivers to stay safe on the roads this Queen’s Birthday weekend.

Road policing staff across Canterbury District will be running Operation Drive Safe in the lead-up to the long weekend.

The aim of the operation is to reinforce positive driving behaviour, with a view to reducing fatal and serious injury crashes.

Drivers can expect to be stopped at checkpoints between 30 May and 1 June, where Police staff will share road safety messages and promotional material on safer driving.

“The week prior to a holiday weekend is a great opportunity for Police to reinforce safe driving messages before people set off on long distance trips,” says Senior Constable Brent Cosgrove.

“We want to remind all drivers planning to head away for the long weekend to share the driving where possible, take regular breaks, and stay alert.”

Wintry conditions are also starting to have an impact on road conditions, and it’s even more important than usual to give yourself the necessary time and space to react.

“This means keeping a close eye on your speed and following distances, and being patient with other drivers on the road.”
