Canterbury Police appeal for witnesses to suspicious fire

Canterbury Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed a fire which destroyed a historic barn on River Road in Christchurch at around 4pm on Wednesday (6 May 2015) to contact them.

Canterbury Police Detective Anita Osborne said the fire was being treated as suspicious.  “The historic barn was on Crown-owned land and was due to be demolished later this year.  Canterbury Police are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time, particularly if they were taking photographs and video's of the fire, as they may be able to provide valuable information that can assist with this ongoing investigation.”

If you witnessed the fire or were amongst the crowd taking photos and videos of the fire please call Canterbury Police on 03 363 7400.

Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 and quoting ‘Christchurch River Road fire 6 May 2015’.

Canterbury Police also encourage anyone who has any information relating to suspicious fires in Canterbury District to contact them or Crimestoppers on the above numbers quoting ‘suspicious fires’.
