At about 5.45pm tonight, Police were alerted to a car submerged in a lake near Westlake Drive, Halswell Christchurch.
Police are at the scene with other emergency services and some police and fire staff have entered the lake to check the vehicle.
It is unclear if there is anyone in the vehicle.
Extra police staff are on their way to the scene to speak to witnesses to ascertain what has occurred.
A scene guard will be in place overnight and no further information is available at this stage.
