1 min read

Public vigilance helped Wellington Police make six arrests for vehicle crimes committed across the district on Sunday morning.

The first came at 7am, when a woman was seen breaking into a car in Woodridge, Wellington. She was arrested with the assistance of a dog handler and bailed to appear before Wellington District Court on Friday.

At 7.40am, Police received reports of youths breaking into a vehicle in Wainuiomata, Lower Hutt. Local residents helped Police locate two of the offenders, one of whom will appear in the Hutt Valley Youth Court. The other will appear before Hutt Valley District Court. Enquiries are ongoing to identify others who may have been involved.

In Mount Cook, Wellington, a police unit was on patrol when a member of the public reported a man breaking into a vehicle on Nairn Street. They subsequently arrested the offender, who is now due to appear before   Wellington District Court on Friday.

A short time later, at 11.25am, officers who were also in the area for the Nairn Street incident responded to reports of a man and a woman breaking into a vehicle in Houghton Bay. Thanks to the information received, the officers were able to locate the vehicle leaving the scene.

The two occupants were arrested and stolen property was recovered. The pair are now due before Wellington District Court on Friday.

"The successful apprehension of the offenders in each of these incidents was a direct result of public vigilance and people’s willingness to contact Police when witnessing a crime," said Senior Sergeant Quentin Ward, from Wellington's District Command Centre.

"We'd like to thank those members of the community for their assistance and continued efforts to help make our community a safer place."
