SH1 Orari truck crash scene

Canterbury Police are at the scene of a single vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 3.20pm today (6 November 2014) on SH1 approximately 200m north of the junction with Fitzgerald Rd.  The State Highway is open as normal.

The female driver and sole occupant was uninjured but has been taken to Timaru Hospital for observation.

The light truck was travelling south along SH1 and is believed to have veered onto the other side of the road and driven over the grass verge between the State Highway and the railway track.  Police understand that the vehicle has then narrowly avoided a deep culvert before hitting the bank near the railway line and rolling onto its side.

Police investigations into the crash are ongoing.

Police say the driver was extremely lucky to avoid injury and this is a timely reminder for all motorists to ensure they stay alert when they are driving and take regular breaks, particularly on long journeys.  Wearing a restraint can save your life and reduce the severity of injury in the event of a crash.  Drive social, avoid distractions such as using your mobile phone while driving and allow adequate time for your trip.
