Enjoying the sun and snow safely this weekend

1 min read

With forecasts for a beautiful winter's weekend ahead and Mount Ruapehu already covered in snow, Central Police are encouraging people to get outside and make the most of it while reminding them to stay safe.

As people travel up to the mountain, Central District Police will be visible and vigilant on the roads to help ensure motorists reach their destinations safely.

"Disappointingly, there have already been a number of drivers stopped on Friday afternoon for exceeding the speed limit," said Sergeant Mike Tarttelin.

"We encourage everyone to get out and enjoy the fabulous weather and spectacle of the mountains with the recreational activities there, but please drive sensibly and stay safe."

If in doubt, there are five simple rules of the road to remember:
* Wear your seatbelt
* Don't use mobile devices while you're driving. Put them away or give them to a passenger to look after.
* Drive to the conditions
* Stay within the speed limit
* Don't drink and drive
