Four men charged following disorder in Ashburton

Canterbury Police have charged four men in relation to a disorder incident last Sunday (1 February 2015) in Ashburton where at least three members of the public and a Police Constable were taken to hospital for treatment.

A 19 year old man has been charged with assault on a member of the public. The Three other men aged 26, 24 and 22 have also been charged with the aggravated assault of a Police officer. They have all been summonsed to appear in Ashburton District Court on 23 February 2015.

Officer in Charge of Ashburton Station, Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said "Canterbury Police take incidents of disorder seriously and anyone  identified as being involved will be held accountable. We are keen to hear from anyone else who witnessed the incident. My team are following a number of leads and further charges may be laid."

The disorder incident occurred in the early hours, after midnight, on Sunday morning (1February 2015) on East Street near the Dick Smith Electrical store. 

Canterbury Police investigations into the incident are continuing.

"On behalf of my team I would like to thank the members of the community who have already come forward and provided information that has been very useful to the investigation" says Senior Sergeant Banfield.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, was injured/assaulted or has any information that may be relevant to the investigation is asked to call Ashburton Police Station on 03 307 8400.
