Highway closed so car can be retrieved

1 min read

SH2 at Mohaka between Napier and Wairoa will be closed from 4pm to 6pm today so a crane can retrieve a car that crashed into the Mohaka River yesterday.

The car was carrying four Wairoa Mongrel Mob members on their way to the Mob's 50th anniversary celebrations in Hastings. It ran off the road near the Mohaka Viaduct.

One person died at the scene, one was injured and two others were trapped in the car.  The police dive squad retrieved the two bodies from the river last night and this morning.

The highway will be closed for two hours later today to enable a crane to get access to the river area and uplift the car from the water.  Diversions will be in place along the highway.

The names of the men involved in the crash will not be released until they have all been formally identified.
