At around 7.15am this morning two vehicles have crashed on State Highway 2 near Kaitoke. Police are appealing for anyone that has witnessed this crash to contact the Wellington District Strategic Traffic Unit.
Sergeant Dave Townsend says "We are particularly interested in anyone who witnessed the actual collision rather than those arriving at the scene shortly afterwards."
"It is far too early to speculate on the cause of the crash and a Serious Crash Unit investigation is continuing. Investigators completed their examination of the crash scene this morning at around 11.00am and wish to thank the public for the patience while this was completed."
Police are in the process of advising the family members of the female driver who died at the scene and will not be releasing their name until this process is completed. The driver of the other vehicle was being treated in hospital today for injuries sustained in the crash.
