Investigations commence after events in Foxton and Levin

1 min read

Police are conducting a scene examination in Foxton today following reports of gunshots being heard on Cook Street at about 7.30pm last night (Saturday 19 November 2016).

People in the Horowhenua town should expect to see Police activity while inquiries are carried out today.

“Based on our inquiries to date, we believe the incident may have been gang-related. We have a number of people to speak with before we can get a clearer picture of what has happened,” says Detective Sergeant Dave Wishnowsky.

“Cordons will remain in place until investigators complete their examination. We will attempt to keep disruption to a minimum during the time we are present.”

Police are also investigating whether the gunshots heard in Foxton are linked to a vehicle that was stopped in Levin.

At about 4.30am, Police used road spikes to stop a ute in rural Levin that was suspected of displaying false registration plates. Three men were arrested and are in custody, and the vehicle is being examined.

One of the occupants was treated by ambulance for a suspected gunshot wound to one of his legs.

A decision on whether to lay charges will be made in due course.

“We are aware that news of these events could be unsettling for the community,” says Mr Wishnowsky.

“We want to reassure local people that their safety is our priority. If anyone feels unsafe, they should not hesitate to call 111.”

Police would welcome any information that would assist in the investigations.

Information can be given to Palmerston North Police on 06 351 3600 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
