Police will continue to work diligently through the night to ensure the safety and well-being of communities affected by the Wellington floods and stormy weather.
“We are continuing to work with the Wellington Region Emergency Management Office and the NZ Transport Agency to ensure our communities and motorists are safe in affected areas” Acting District Commander Paul Basham says.
“We can also reassure the community that we have sufficient resources in place to respond to any other events.”
Mr. Basham says drivers are advised to stay off Kapiti and Hutt Valley roads this evening wherever possible, but also request that motorists reconsider their normal commuting patterns ahead of tomorrow.
“We encourage motorists who may be planning their commute to work in the morning to think twice and use alternative transport if available. Roads and State Highways will still be congested and potentially damaged. As per NZTA advice, travellers should work from home, travel at off-peak times or travel by foot or bike where possible” Mr Basham says.
Police and other agencies will continue to monitor the situation overnight and have contingency plans in place ahead of tomorrow. Police will continue to maintain a presence through the night, and have sufficient resources in place to cope with normal demand and any further demands that may be created by the adverse weather overnight.
