Man arrested following serious assault at New Brighton Mall

Canterbury Police would like to thank shop owners in New Brighton Mall for their help today while Police completed a scene examination following a serious assault in the early hours of this morning (15 July 2015).

Detective Sergeant Colin Baillie says “Canterbury Police investigations into the serious assault of an elderly man in New Brighton Mall this morning has resulted in an arrest.  Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident.  The 72 year old victim was taken to Christchurch Hospital in the early hours of this morning where he remains in a serious but stable condition.” 

A 19 year old Christchurch man has been arrested and is due to appear in Christchurch District Court tomorrow (16 July 2015) on serious assault charges.

“Police would like to thank the community and shop owners for their patience while a cordon was in place to allow officers to complete a scene examination.” said Detective Sergeant Baillie.
