Man in custody after armed incident

1 min read

Police are currently speaking with a man who prompted an armed offenders callout to a small rural settlement north of Napier late this morning.

Police were called to a house in Waikoau around 11.20am today when a woman said she had been assaulted by her partner and a shot had been fired.  The woman was able to escape to a nearby property to safety.  She was physically assaulted and it is yet to be established if the shot was fired at her.

Police and the Hawke’s Bay Armed Offenders Squad made their way to the isolated settlement and found the man in a local house.  He was arrested without incident around 1.30pm.

It is believed the woman suffered minor injuries in the assault.

The man is now in custody and being spoken to by police.  A cordon at the intersection of SH2 and Waikoau Rd has now been lifted.
