Man shot in leg at Lower Hutt address

1 min read

Hutt Valley Police are investigating a firearms incident in Biddell Street, Taita, after a 46-year-old man living at the house sustained a gunshot wound to the leg earlier today.

He is currently in hospital receiving medical treatment. The injuries are not life-threatening and no-one else was harmed during the incident.

Senior Sergeant Glenn Barnett of Hutt Valley CIB said Police were called to the house at about 6.10am, with the Armed Offenders Squad called in shortly after following reports of a firearm being present.

"A scene examination of the house is currently underway, and we are speaking with the five people who were present at the time to build a clearer picture of what has occurred and the possible motivation behind it. Inquires are also continuing to locate the person responsible.

"Our preliminary inquiries indicate that this appears to be an isolated incident specific to this address, so we don't believe there is any wider risk to the community."

Mr Barnett said the scene examination would likely take most of the day. No further details are available at this stage.
