Auckland City Police want to know who took a kayak and a range of survival equipment to Rangitoto Island…and left it there.

The distinctive 3.5m long Ocean Kayak, originally yellow but painted blue and black in the style of Navy camouflage [see attached pics], was found stashed above the high tide mark by people carrying out weed eradication at Flax Point in early March. They subsequently notified Department of Conservation staff who advised the Police Maritime Unit of the find yesterday.

Senior Constable Anthony Flannagan says it's possible that whoever took the kayak to Rangitoto Island is still there.

"We're not aware of any missing person reports that fit with the equipment that's been passed onto us but, if anyone knows who used the kayak earlier this year, we'd like to hear from them.

"It may be that it was stored for future use and whoever did that left the island by other means, but we want to be assured that whoever took it there is safe and well, not lost or injured on Rangitoto Island."

If anyone owns or has used this property, or knows who has, they should contact the Police Maritime Unit on 0800 102835.
