2 min read

Palmerston North Police are continuing with their inquiries after a man was shot in the leg late yesterday evening (25 November, 2013).

The incident occurred in the suburb of Highbury in Palmerston North at approximately 10:30pm.

The victim, a 50-year-old man, was in his home on Duncan Place when he saw movement out by his vehicle which was parked on the street.

The victim went outside and spoke with a man and it is believed that an argument then erupted which resulted in the victim being shot in the leg.

Officer in charge of the investigation Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Harrison said: "The victim's family called Police immediately and the Armed Offenders Squad was deployed, however the male offender was not located."

The victim was taken to Palmerston North Hospital and will undergo surgery for his injuries.

At this stage it is unclear if the incident is gang related but the men are known to each other.

"I want to reassure the public that Police are committed to maintaining safe communities and this was an isolated incident.

"Officers are canvassing the area today and speaking with the victim's family as well as other witnesses. A scene examination is also underway at the property.

"While the victim's injuries are believed to be non-life threatening his well-being is important and we have not had a chance to formally interview him yet. However, we have spoken with him briefly and have some positive lines of inquiry regarding the identity of the offender which we are progressing."

The weapon used in the incident has not been recovered but Police believe it may have been a shotgun.

"We want to speak to anyone who may know something about this incident or who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area and we encourage them to contact Police," said Detective Senior Sergeant Harrison.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Palmerston North Police on (06) 351 3600. Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
