Police investigating Manurewa brawl

1 min read

Counties Manukau Police are investigating an incident that occurred yesterday in Manurewa involving a group of females fighting.

Police officers were in the area at around 1:20pm when they spotted around 40 young people gathered on Browns Road. Some of the females in that group were fighting, which Police managed to break up.

A video of the incident was then posted online.

One of the females involved has been referred to Youth Aid, but enquiries are ongoing.

Counties Manukau Central Area Commander Inspector Julia Lynch says Police are working closely with Manurewa High school to identify the students involved, and cannot rule out further consequences for those involved.

“It is lucky that no one, including the Police officers who attended the incident, was seriously injured. This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated and Police will make every effort to speak with the teenagers involved, and with their parents or caregivers.”

“This kind of behaviour is a community problem. It is an issue for parents, caregivers and schools, everyone has a part in this. But Police want to see parents and caregivers take more responsibility for their children and make sure you know what they are doing, and who they are spending their time with.”

Inspector Lynch says there is a growing trend of young people, some as young as ten, across the country, using social media to meet up online and carrying out all sorts of crimes; such as stealing cars, carrying out ram raids and aggravated robberies.

“We know it is not always easy, but there are a number of agencies you can turn to if you need assistance with young people including, Salvation Army, Youthline, Iosis, the Soloman Group or Strive.”
