Police are seeking the public's help in locating the car and driver involved in an overnight crash in Huntly that left live power lines hanging over the rear entrance of the local fire station.
Officer in charge of North Western Waikato Road Policing, Sergeant Neil Mansill said the crash involved a south bound vehicle on Huntly's Ralph St about 8.20pm.
"Video footage and parts recovered from the scene suggest the vehicle was a black 2006-07 Toyota Camry or Aurion saloon similar to the one shown in the accompanying photo.
"This car has mounted the left hand curb and collided with a power-pole outside the Huntly Fire Station. The driver has then fled the scene in his car which, owing to wreckage left behind, we believe was serious damage to its left front."
Mr Mansill said last night's crash could have had serious consequences for the safety of local volunteer fire-fighters and members of the public requiring the Fire Service's assistance.
"Many fire-fighters responding to call outs use this entrance which, until power company contractors were able to make it safe, had live power lines hanging low over the entrance.
"It also had the potential to delay fire-fighters had they been needed to give assistance as first responders so we are very keen to tap into the good will of the Huntly community to identify the location of the car and its driver."
